The University at Albany baseball team earned a series sweep over non-conference opponent LIU Brooklyn on Sunday in a rain-shortened series finale that saw the Great Danes win by a final score of 3-1.
Sunday, UAlbany also held their annual vs. Cancer game, raising awareness for childhood cancer. Head coach Jon Mueller and several players had their heads shaved for the event following the conclusion of the game.
UAlbany scored all of its runs Saturday in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Kondo hit a leadoff single to third, and advanced to second when Travis Collins drew a walk. Kevin Donati next advanced all runners with a bunt and beat out the play at first. With the bases loaded and no one out, Marc Wangenstein hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Kondo from third. Brad Malm re-loaded the bases with one out, ahead of Patrick Lagravinese hitting a single to left, scoring Collins and Donati and giving UAlbany an early 3-0 lead.
Neither team scored for the next four innings, before LIU Brooklyn mustered their one and only run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth. UAlbany did put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
The game was called in the seventh inning due to rain, and UAlbany clinched the 3-1 and series victory. The Great Danes now hold a winning record at 22-21 overall with eight games remaining in the regular season.
