Recap

No. 2-seeded Vermont scored the last four goals of the game in the fourth quarter and defeated the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team, 13-9, in an America East semifinal game in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Davis Diamond had a hat trick, and Tehoka Nanticoke (one goal) as well as Jakob Patterson had three points each for the Great Danes.

But UAlbany, the two-time defending league champion, was outscored 7-3 in the second half in losing in the semifinals for just the third time in 14 appearances.

“We just didn’t put the ball in the goal enough times today, and they did,” said Scott Marr, UAlbany’s head coach. “But I’m really appreciative of my team’s effort. We just couldn’t get over the hump this year. It’s not for a lack of effort and certainly not a lack of pride. It just wasn’t meant to be for this group. We’ll regroup and have a good summer and get ready for next year.”

Diamond scored at the end of the third quarter and Ron John scored early in the fourth to erase a two-goal deficit and tie the game at 9 with 13:46 left.

But that was the last goal of the game for the Great Danes, who were 1-for-9 on man-up opportunities. Vermont goalkeeper Nick Washuta made 16 saves.

UAlbany goalkeeper Will Ramos, making his first career appearance in place of the injured Nate Siekierski, stopped nine shots in the first half, helping preserve a 6-6 tie at the intermission.

The Great Danes had led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 5-2 in the second before the Catamounts rallied.
