ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team wraps a four-game home stand on Tuesday with a visit from in-state rival Iona. UAlbany previously played a single game at Iona, whose head coach is former UAlbany assistant Paul Panik, earlier this season.
The Great Danes (14-16, 6-6 AE) last hosted UMBC in the team’s fourth America East series of the season. After dropping the first game in the series 7-1, UAlbany stormed back to take each of the next two, claiming their second-straight conference series victory. In the series opening double-header, neither UAlbany starting pitcher, Dominic Savino and Ray Weber, allowed a walk despite combining to pitch 13.2 of 16 total innings.
Iona last played a three-game series against conference opponent Rider, winning two of three games to snap an eight-game losing streak, including two losses to UAlbany’s America East rival Stony Brook. Since playing UAlbany earlier this season, Iona has gone 3-7 overall.
In the first meeting this season, UAlbany defeated Iona 5-4 in 12 innings. The Gaels scored first in the bottom of the fourth before UAlbany jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Iona scored once in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to force extras. Tied at four entering the 12th, UAlbany scored on a fielder’s choice to go ahead by one and ultimately clinch the victory.
With the latest series win over UMBC, the Great Danes remain in fourth place in the conference standings. Stony Brook continues to hold the top spot at 9-3 in-conference, followed by Hartford at 6-3 and Maine at 6-5. The Black Bears have rallied to go 5-0 in conference after starting 1-5.
Following the game against Iona, the Great Danes will visit Stony Brook for a three-game set starting Friday, April 19. UAlbany returns home on Tuesday, April 23 for a single game against Central Connecticut State to kick off a 10-game home stand.
