The University at Albany baseball team knocked off Marist on Tuesday, scoring 10 runs in the final three innings to claim a 10-2 victory. UAlbany got back in the win column after dropping two of three to America East rival Binghamton in the 2019 home-opening series over the weekend.
Marist scored first, crossing the plate twice in the bottom of the second inning. Neither team would score again until the top of the seventh, when UAlbany took the lead for good.
The inning started with Will Feil came up to lead off, pinch hitting for Alex Thul. Feil worked a leadoff walk, and was replaced on first base with pinch runner Kevin Donati. Brad Malm came up and reached safely on a fielding error by Marist’s third baseman, allowing Donati to advance to second. Next up, Jason Bottari hit a single to center, scoring Donati from second and advancing Malm one base.
With the Red Foxes’ lead cut in half, Dolan Ocasal reached on another error from the Marist third baseman, which allowed Malm to score from second to tie the game. Matt Codispoti came up, pinch hitting for Josh Gurnack, and grounded out to short, but giving the Danes their first lead of the night when Bottari scored from third. Finally, Nick Kondo hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Ocasal to put UAlbany up 4-2.
Marist could not respond in the bottom of the inning, and neither team scored in the eighth. UAlbany lit up the scoreboard for six runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-2 lead.
Malm led off the top of the ninth with a double to left, and advanced to third when Bottari singled to third. Ocasal next singled through the right side, scoring Malm and advancing Bottari to third. After a pitching change for Marist, Ocasal stole second, leaving two runners in scoring position for Codispoti, who hit a double to left and cleared the bases.
Codispoti advanced to third on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat, and scored when Kondo singled to right. After Travis Collins flied out to center, Patrick Lagravinese hit a triple to right, scoring Kondo from first. A strikeout from Marc Wangenstein preceded Donati reaching safely on a throwing error by Marist’s shortstop, which also allowed Lagravinese to score from third for the Danes 10th and final run of the afternoon.
Marist hit a single and drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth, putting a runner on second base with two outs, but the Red Foxes did not threaten further and the game ended with an eight-run UAlbany victory.
Codispoti finished hitting 1-2 with a double and three RBIs coming off the bench. Kondo hit 2-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Lagravinese hit 1-5 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. On the mound, Connor Morrisroe lasted 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout. Four UAlbany pitchers, Dan Yankowski, Hunter Torres, Connor Takacs, and Joe Kruszka, combined to pitch the final 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
