Short Story: Leading at halftime, women’s lacrosse falls in its first road game of the season, falling at #19 Penn State 11-9.

Playing on the road for the first time this season, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team fell at #19 Penn State on Saturday, 11-9.  The Great Danes jumped out to a 6-3 halftime lead before the Nittany Lions stormed back following the break to claim victory.


The loss, UAlbany’s second in a row, drops the Great Danes to 3-2 on the season.  After starting the year 3-0, UAlbany has dropped its last two, each to ranked opponents.


Penn State got on the board first, scoring with 27:48 remaining in the first.  Less than a minute of game time later, UAlbany tied the game at one with Madison Conway finding the next on a setup from Sam Tortora.  The goal sparked a 3-0 run for the Great Danes, who led 3-1 before Penn State scored again wing 16:49 remaining.


Neither team scored for the next 11 minutes when UAlbany notched another goal with 5:41 left in the first.  The Great Danes would score three of the last four goals of the half to take a 6-3 lead into the break.


The Great Danes controlled the offensive tempo through the first 30 minutes, out-shooting Penn State 18-7.  Tortora had scored twice in the first and added three assists, contributing to five of the Danes’ six first-half goals.


Penn State came out firing in the second half, scoring four straight to take a 7-6 lead with 21:05 remaining.  Tortora scored on a free position attempt to tie the game at seven, before Penn State took the lead for good, scoring each of the next three.  UAlbany scored two of the last three goals of the game, including Conway from Tortora with 3:43 to go, but the comeback attempt ran out of time and UAlbany fell 11-9.


Penn State outscored UAlbany 8-3 in the second half, outshooting the Danes 22-8 in taking over the offensive pressure.  Tortora finished with three goals and five assists, contributing to all but one of UAlbany’s scores on the afternoon.  Conway finished with four goals to lead all individual scorers.


Next: UAlbany plays its second-straight game on the road with a trip to UConn on Wednesday, March 13.
