Score: Vermont 67, UAlbany 49

Location: Patrick Gymnasium in Burlington, Vt.

Records: UAlbany (8-16, 3-6 AE); Vermont (19-5, 9-1 AE)

Short Story: UAlbany sees its three-game winning streak snapped at Vermont to kick off the second half of America East play.

Coach Brown: “I think we lost this game in the first half, because of self-inflicted stuff that you have to avoid when you play Vermont.  We got out-rebounded by double-digits in the first half, and that killed us.  I think our defense was outstanding in the first half, but they got some free opportunities off the glass.  I thought worst case it should have been an even game at halftime, and I thought we wasted away a really good opportunity and a good defensive effort.  I knew we’d struggle to score, just because of the way they defend and the way our team is constructed, but I thought we defended much better than we did in the first game.”

Recap

Riding a three-game winning streak, the University at Albany kicked off the second half of the America East slate at Vermont on Saturday.  Despite locking down on defense and holding an early lead, the Great Danes fell to the Catamounts 67-49.

The Great Danes got off to a better start Saturday than in the first meeting against Vermont a month ago.  UAlbany held a slim lead early while stifling Vermont’s offense.  With 14:48 to go in the first, UAlbany took its biggest lead of the night, four points.

Vermont took its first lead of the game with 10:08 remaining in the first half, initiating a scoring run that would span the remainder of the first half.

Healy missed the first of a one-and-one with 8:07 left in the first half, ending his consecutive free-throws streak at 18.  He had improved his percentage to .923 during the stretch, ranking fifth in the country in the category.

Vermont hit a three-pointer on three straight possessions, taking a 10-point 24-14 lead with 3:56 remaining in the first half as part of a larger 15-2 run.  The Catamounts had shot just 5-21 to from the floor to start the game before their three-point barrage.

Vermont closed the first half on a 21-9 run, but only shot 30% from the floor for the first 20 minutes.  The Catamounts grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and shot a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.  UAlbany shot just 2-10 from three in the first half, and just 3-7 from the line.  Cameron Healy and Adam Lulka shared the UAlbany lead with six points apiece.

Vermont hit back-to-back threes to take a 47-28 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining in the second half.  The Catamounts ultimately opened the second half on a 24-6 run.

UAlbany’s highlight of the second half came when they hit three straight threes to cut the lead to 58-40 with 7:38 remaining.

Vermont went on to win 67-49.  The Catamounts recovered to shoot 51.7% in the second half, and finished the game perfect from the free-throw line.  Antonio Rizzuto led UAlbany with 15 points, and Brent Hank led with nine rebounds.

Next: UAlbany returns home for one game, hosting UMass Lowell on Wednesday, February 13, before heading back on the road for two in a row.
