ALBANY, N.Y. -- Former University at Albany men’s lacrosse player Blaze Riorden delivered one of the most exciting moments in the National Lacrosse League season this past week when he scored in overtime to lift the Philadelphia Wings to their first victory.
Riorden, who had been a four-year starting goalie for the Great Danes before moving to forward in the NLL, finished a one-timer 31 seconds into overtime to deliver the Wings a 15-14 win over the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday, Feb. 2.
It was the 10th goal of the season for the 2016 UAlbany graduate, who also has nine assists.
Meanwhile, two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner Lyle Thompson of the Georgia Swarm leads the league in goals with 27, is tied for fourth in assists with 27 and ranks third in points. His brother and teammate both at UAlbany and Georgia, Miles, has 10 goals and eight assists.
Other former Great Danes playing in the NLL this season include:
Joe Resetarits, Rochester Knighthawks: 10 goals, 19 assists
Seth Oakes, New England Black Wolves: four goals, seven assists
Dave Brock, New England Black Wolves: two goals, three assists
Adam Osika, Philadelphia Wings: two assists
The NLL is the largest professional indoor lacrosse league in North America, with seven teams in the United States and four in Canada. UAlbany has been well-represented in the league. At least one former Great Dane has been chosen in the league’s draft every year since 2012.
