Great Danes Shut Down Stony Brook in 54-49 Victory

Recap: UAlbany fended off a resilient Stony Brook team in the second half to earn a 54-49 win at the Island Federal Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
UAlbany has now won three consecutive games and improves to 4-2 in league action. With the win, the Great Danes leap frog the Seawolves, claiming sole possession of third place in the America East standings.
Paced by three double-digit scorers, the Great Danes led throughout the entirety of the contest. Kyara Frames headlined the offense with 17 points, while Amanda Kantzy and Heather Forster added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Once again, UAlbany came out fast out of the gate, grabbing a 13-2 lead midway through the opening stanza. Frames hit a triple to put her team ahead 17-7 at 3:34, but a late 5-1 spurt by the Seawolves cut the difference to 18-12 at the end of the first.
The two teams traded baskets to begin the second quarter, before five consecutive points from Frames gave her team a 10-point lead. Stony Brook was able to cut the difference to single digits right before the half as Shania Johnson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Heading into the break with a 31-23 lead, Frames established a new career-high for points in the first half with 14.
The Seawolves offense found their way in the third quarter. The home team rattled off a quick 11 points, making it a 35-33 game at 4:50. The Great Dane’s got its advantage back up to nine with 1:23 to play as they responded with a seven-point run.
Stony Brook got within one, 43-42, with 7:55 to play before Kantzy connected from down town to make it a two-possession game.
The battle continued as the Seawolves once again brought the difference to one, 49-48. UAlbany responded to the comeback with a three pointer from Kumsal Aslan before knocking down two free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
