Kantzy Shines in Great Danes, 64-56, Loss at Monmouth

Short Story: Amanda Kantzy notched a new career-high of 19 points but the UAlbany women’s basketball team saw its comeback thwarted at Monmouth on Wednesday evening.

Recap: Amanda Kantzy scored 19 points, Chyanna Canada added 12 but UAlbany was tripped up 64-56 at Monmouth on Wednesday night.

Trailing by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, an 18-4 run by the Great Danes cut the deficit to six, 62-56, with 46 seconds remaining. Monmouth would sink a pair of late free throws to keep UAlbany at bay until the final buzzer would sound.

Kantzy scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half, on 4-7 shooting from long range, while Khepera Stokes added all eight of her points in the final 20 minutes. The Great Danes outscored the home team 33-28 during that span.

The Great Danes were out of sync late in the first half after a strong start, falling into a 13-point hole in the second quarter. The Hawks 23 second-quarter points came on 9-17 (52.9%) shooting from the floor. UAlbany scored just nine points in the second frame.

Monmouth did most of their damage in the paint, outscoring the Great Danes 22-16. The Hawks also found success on their bench as their reserves accounted for 25 points in the tilt.

UAlbany turned the ball over just 11 times tonight, matching a season best.

Next Up: The Great Danes return home on Sunday, Nov. 25 against Holy Cross. Tip-off is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the SEFCU Arena.
