The University at Albany men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to three-seed UMass Lowell in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament on Saturday. The loss was UAlbany’s first in the America East Tournament since 2016, ending a stretch of five straight victories in the tournament including two straight tournament titles.
The Great Danes entered the quarterfinal round riding a three-game winning streak during which they had outscored their opponents 6-0. Their last loss was at UMass Lowell on October 20. UAlbany had to win its last two conference games, against UMBC and Binghamton, to earn their bid to the 2018 tournament.
It was the second rematch of the season for UAlbany and UMass Lowell, the two participants in the 2017 America East title game hosted by the Riverhawks. In the first meeting this season, UMass Lowell defeated UAlbany 2-0.
The Riverhawks held the Great Danes without a shot in the first half, while taking seven of their own. Only one of UMass Lowell’s shots was on target, however.
UAlbany came out of the halftime break pushing the pace, taking their first shot of the half and the game in the 47th minute, followed by two corner kicks and another shot over the next minute of game time. In the 51st minute, UAlbany took its final shot of the game.
UMass Lowell regained their first-half form following UAlbany’s early second-half surge, controlling the pace of play for much of the remaining time. After drawing a corner kick in the 88th minute, the Riverhawks took advantage of the ensuing loose ball in the box to find the back of the net and take a late, 1-0 lead.
Though UAlbany didn’t manage to take a shot for the remainder of the game, their last, best opportunity came in the final minute when senior Ryan Langkafel found some space and just missed getting his foot on a ball played in high to the top of the UMass Lowell box. The ball bounced away harmlessly and UMass Lowell went on to win 1-0.
Senior Nico Solabarrieta will graduate as UAlbany’s second-leading scorer in program history. He will also leave the program holding records in single-game points and goals, as well as the career record in assists, which he and teammate Daniel Krutzen each individually held at various points this season. Goalkeeper Danny Vitiello will graduate as the all-time program leader in victories. Collectively, this group of seniors has won 45 games over the last five seasons, including the program’s first two America East titles.
Next: UAlbany’s season has come to an end after two straight America East Championship victories. UMass Lowell advances to the America East semifinals to face two-seed New Hampshire.
