The University at Albany men’s soccer team earned its first shutout victory of the season, defeating #22 Cornell 1-0 in overtime.  It was the Great Danes’ final road game and non-conference game of the 2018 regular season.

Cornell tested UAlbany quickly, getting off their first shot in just the second minute.  UAlbany didn’t take its first shot until the 16th minute, when Ryan Langkafel’s effort was saved by Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Shellow.

Cornell had a golden opportunity to take an early lead after drawing a foul in the UAlbany box in the 18th minute and earning a penalty kick.  Cornell’s John Scearcce took the attempt but was stifled by UAlbany goalkeeper Danny Vitiello, whose save kept the game scoreless.

After the first 45 minutes, neither team found the back of the net.  UAlbany came out aggressively in the second half, taking three shots before Cornell took one.  With three minutes to go in regulation, UAlbany drew one corner kick and took two shots, to no avail, as the second half ended in a scoreless tie.

UAlbany entered its sixth overtime game of the season, and first since visiting New Hampshire on October 5 where the Danes fell 1-0.  This time, UAlbany scored in the 96th minute when Nico Solabarrieta set up Carlos Clark for the game-winner.

The Danes improve to 2-4 in overtime games this season, last winning against another Ivy League team, Harvard, 3-2 on August 31, when Solabarrieta set up Clark for the game-winner in the 99th minute.
