Women's Soccer Falls 2-1 at Hartford

UAlbany Sports Information   10-11-2018

Score: Hartford 2, UAlbany 1

Location: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium in West Hartford, Conn.

Records: UAlbany (8-6-2, 2-2-1 AE); Hartford (11-1-2, 4-0-1 AE)

Short Story: UAlbany’s second-half pressure is not enough in 2-1 loss at America East leader Hartford Thursday night.

Coach Bochette: It's a bitter result for us without a doubt, but there were some big positives for us as well. Hartford is a well-coached, organized, hard-working, and talented team, but we really dictated the game in the second half. We created quality chances and their second goal really came against the run of play. Credit to them, however, for finishing off the game. In the end, that's what matters most. There's a reason they've gone 11 games unbeaten, and they earned their victory tonight as well.

Key Stats

  • UAlbany outshot Hartford 11-4, including 7-1 in the second half
  • Six of UAlbany’s shots were on target
  • Mariah Williams led UAlbany with four shots
  • Hartford goalkeeper Maia Perez made five saves

Recap

Following a two-game winning streak in which they scored eight goals, the University at Albany women’s soccer team visited Hartford on Thursday.  The Hawks entered the game leading the America East with a 3-0-1 conference record, while the Danes were tied for third.

Thursday’s game was originally scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m., but thunderstorms in the forecast for the afternoon pushed the opening kickoff until 7:00 p.m.

Hartford got on the board first, going up 1-0 in the 22nd minute when Julia Carr set up Gabriela Gamory for her sevehth goal of the season.  Carr played a long ball in and Gamory ripped a shot high into the net.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the first half, with Hartford holding a 1-0 lead entering the break.  Shortly after the start of the second half, in the 56th minute, Hartford scored again to go up 2-0.  Gamory recorded the assist on Ashley Claud’s sixth goal of the season, setting up Claud with a through ball to the middle for a finish in the corner.

UAlbany turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Hawks 7-1 for the second 45 minutes while drawing six corner kicks to Hartford’s one.  But the Danes weren’t able to find the back of the net until Mariah Williams successfully converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.  There wasn’t enough time remaining for UAlbany to tie the game, and the Danes fell 2-1.

Next: The Great Danes return home to host New Hampshire on Sunday, October 14.
