Men's lacrosse set to host 4-team HEADstrong event
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s lacrosse program will be hosting the HEADstrong Foundation’s Nick Colleluori Men’s Lacrosse Albany Classic on Saturday, Oct. 13, on the grass fields adjacent to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
In addition to the Great Danes, the four-team tournament includes Johns Hopkins, Vermont and Army. UAlbany will face Johns Hopkins at 11 a.m. and Army at 1 p.m. In other games, Army faces Vermont at 11 a.m., and John Hopkins faces Vermont at 1 p.m.
In lieu of admission, a suggested donation of $5 to the HEADstrong Foundation will be requested at the gate. Parking is available in the Dutch Lot for $10.
At 12:30 p.m., HEADstrong will present its hero of the day, JP Honsinger, a Clifton Park, N.Y., native who suffers from Niemann Pick Type C, a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive deterioration of the nervous system. Honsinger has been an integral part of the men’s lacrosse program, spending time with student-athletes and coaches, assisting on the sidelines and cheering from the stands.
"UAlbany is thrilled to be hosting a HEADstrong Foundation event,” Head Coach Scott Marr said. “The day will be dedicated to JP Honsinger as our hero for the day. Proceeds from the event will go to JP’s foundation.
"As for the lacrosse action, we are pleased to welcome Johns Hopkins, Army and Vermont to our campus. This is the first time both Hopkins and Army have been on our campus. Please join us for a great day of action and a wonderful cause!"
Founded by former Hofstra athlete Nick Cellulori, who passed away in 2006 after a 14-month battle with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, HEADstrong works to assist and empower those affected by cancer while also raising awareness and funding for research.
Since 2007, HEADstrong has presented a series of fall collegiate men’s and women’s lacrosse philanthropic events. Originating at Ridley High School, Colleluori’s alma mater, the series has expanded to nine events overall that are hosted regionally in conjunction with collegiate partnerships. The second weekend of October will be the second of three consecutive weekends during the month to feature multiple lacross 2016 afe events at multiple locations.
“I’d like to express deep appreciation to Coach Scott Marr for bringing our event to Albany this year,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong’s president and Nick’s mom. “We are thrilled to touch a new audience as we strive to expand our reach, allowing us to assist more families affected by cancer. We thank all the coaches for embracing us and committing to the vision of our founder, my son, Nicholas.”
