Short story: The University at Albany field hockey team opened America East play Friday night with a 1-0 road victory over UMass Lowell. Carli Pelletier scored at the 64:17 mark, and goalkeeper Melissa Nealon earned her fourth shutout of the season.
UAlbany outshot UMass Lowell 22-6, including a 16-2 margin in the second half.
Head coach Phil Sykes: "Hard fought game tonight. Our defense was very solid against a tough UMass Lowell team. Offensively, we created some good opportunities and were a bit unlucky at times. Very proud of our team effort to secure the win."
Carli Pelletier’s first career goal lifted the University at Albany field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday in the America East opener for both teams.
Pelletier broke toward the cage from the right side with less than six minutes to play and flipped a shot over the keeper that gave the Great Danes their third consecutive victory and fourth in five games.
Melissa Nealon (4-2), who entered the game with a 0.50 goals-against average and .850 save percentage that rank second in the nation, earned the win in net by posting her fourth shutout of the season.
UAlbany returns home to face No. 15 Delaware at 1 p.m. Sunday.
