UAlbany Earns First Win of 2018, Splits on Day One

Short Story: The UAlbany volleyball team earned a split decision on day one of the Black Knight Invitational – defeating Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 before falling to host Army West Point, 3-2.
UAlbany: Akuabata Okenwa and Danielle Tedesco combined for 29 of the team’s 53 kills in the win against Southeastern Louisiana. Tedesco posted 23 kills on the day and notched a team-high five aces while Okenwa led all Great Danes in kills (28).
Southeastern Louisiana: The Lions hit .579 as a team in set two. In their only set win of the game, Southeastern Louisiana hit .579 and held the Great Danes to a 0.65 hitting percentage in the set.
Army West Point: After falling in sets one and two, the Black Knights stormed back winning the final three games to complete the five-game comeback. Sydney Morriss led Army West Point with 21 kills and hit for .302. Emily Barnhorst and Courtney Harce joined Morriss in double digit kills posting 17 and 14, respectively.
UAlbany: In the first match of the day the Great Danes came out hot, scoring the first four points against Southeastern Louisiana. Tedesco and Okenwa were dominate in set one recording back-to-back kills to push the lead to 16-10. The Great Danes were able to close the book on game one thanks to a 3-0 run which featured a service ace by Kelly Cameron and a kill by Grace Cozad. UAlbany went on to win 25-20.
Southeastern Louisiana: The two teams traded points to begin the second set as the Lions found themselves with a slight 7-6 lead. A 6-2 Southeastern Louisiana run was sparked by a pair of attack errors by the Great Danes and a kill by Elyssa Purcell. The Lions were able to secure the second set thanks to Maddy Katchen's kill for a 25-15 victory.
Army West Point: Set three and four were separated by a combined four points between the two teams. The Black Knights jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set before Grace Cozard and Kelly Cameron blasted back-to-back kills putting the Great Danes up 16-11. UAlbany could not keep up with a tough Black Knight front line that carried the home team to a 26-24 win. Army West Point would go on to win the final two sets of the match.
Back in Action:
UAlbany concludes the Black Knight Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Great Danes are set to battle in-state foe Hofstra (2:30 p.m.).
