Short Story: The Great Danes controlled the ball for the majority of the game, outshooting the Orange 10-7. However, a second half goal was all Syracuse needed to hold off their in-state rival UAlbany,1-0, in the team’s season opener.

The 0-0 tie lasted until the 38th minute when Roos Weers slid the Orange into the lead. Syracuse, who had not recorded a shot prior to the goal, earned a penalty corner following a UAlbany foul. Tess Queen inserted the penalty corner to Weers who was waiting at the top of the semicircle. Weers then lifted the ball past the goalkeeper to put the Orange ahead.
With less than five minutes left, the Great Danes trusted their defense and pulled the goalkeeper to apply additional pressure on the attack. Katie MacCallum was the designated extra defender with the goalkeeper out of the game.
Neither team was able to score again for the remainder of regulation. UAlbany fought until the final horn earning four straight penalty corners. However, the squad was unable to capitalize with an extra attacker on offense. At the end of regulation, Syracuse took a final score of 1-0.
