Short Story: UAlbany baseball splits the conference opening doubleheader with UMass Lowell in Rhode Island.
Coach Mueller: “Dom was tremendous today in that second game. I thought Brendan Smith pitched great, too. I think that it was tough for both teams to score, but that’s what America East baseball is all about. Both teams played very clean defense, but when Dom is throwing like that in the second game it’s very difficult to score runs on him. We’re now in a position to win this series tomorrow and that’s what our goal is.”
Game One: Brendan Smith lasted 7.0 innings allowing two runs with nine strikeouts and no walks
Marc Wangensten hit 2-5 with a double and two RBIs
UMass Lowell got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the second
UAlbany took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Patrick Lagravinese led off with a single to left, but was caught stealing in the ensuing at bat. With two outs and no one on, Brad Malm drew a walk, and advanced to second when Connor Powers singled through the left side. With runners on first and second, Marc Wangenstein hit a two-RBI double to left, scoring Malm and Powers.
UMass Lowell tied the game at two in the bottom of the seventh
UMass Lowell won the first game after drawing a two-out, bases-loaded walk
UAlbany scored the game’s only run in the top of the third. Matt Codispoti hit a leadoff home run.
After UAlbany scored, UMass Lowell threatened in the bottom of the third and in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to advance a runner past second base
