Baseball Rallies Late To Beat Saint Peter's 10-6

Short Story: Connor Powers hits a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth to push UAlbany baseball past Saint Peter’s.

Coach Mueller: "Outstanding come from behind win by the team today.  We continue to roll out young guys and allow them to go through the ups and downs of baseball.  Brown and Cournoyer threw well and Josh Gurnack had a tremendous at bat late.  Powers had a monster day and Yankowski closed the door"

How it happened

  • UAlbany took a quick lead with three runs in the top of the first. With one out and no one on, Brad Malm hit a single to center, setting up a two-run home run for Connor Powers in the next at-bat. Marc Wangenstein immediately followed up Powers with a home run of his own.
  • Saint Peter’s scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut UAlbany’s lead to 3-2
  • Saint Peter’s took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth
  • UAlbany tied the game at four in the top of the seventh. With one out and no one on, Alex Thul hit a single to left field. Josh Gurnack and Nick Kondo worked back-to-back walks to load the bases. Malm then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Thul from third.
  • Saint Peter’s took back the lead with one run in the bottom of the seventh
  • Leading 5-4, Saint Peter’s loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, resulting in one more run for the Peacocks
  • In the top of the ninth, Ryan Hernandez worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, and further to third when Thul grounded out to the Saint Peter’s pitcher. He scored when Gurnack singled to third. Gurnack advanced to second on a wild pitch before Nick Kondo earned a walk. Malm was next hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out and UAlbany trailing by one. Powers came up and hit his second home run of the afternoon to put UAlbany ahead for good. Wangenstein was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then advanced to third and home on consecutive wild pitches to put UAlbany up 10-6. 

Next: After 13 games, the Great Danes finally open America East play this weekend at UMass Lowell. The UAlbany home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 against Massachusetts.
