Recap

Madion Conway’s hat trick and Emma Powlin’s five-point afternoon weren’t enough for the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team in a 15-11 setback against Connecticut on Wednesday.

Freshmen Kendra Harbinger and Kyla Zapolski also scored twice each for the Great Danes (0-5) in a game moved indoors to the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury, N.Y., because of a snow storm.

UAlbany couldn’t overcome a 7-4 halftime deficit that resulted from Connecticut’s three-goal burst in the final 1:01 before the intermission. Caitlin Leary scored all three of the goals for the Huskies (4-3), of the BIG EAST, with the last coming just 10 seconds before the half.

That sequence broke open the biggest lead of the half for UConn in what had been an even game. After the teams traded goals early, Zapolski scored off a feed from Powlin to tie the game at 4 with 5:16 left in the first.

The Huskies led by as many as six in the second half before Harbinger scored two straight goals, the first on a free-position shot, to narrow the lead to 12-8. But UConn answered with consecutive goals of its own to reestablish a six-goal lead.

Conway and Paige Werlau each scored for the Great Danes in the final three minutes.
