Quote: “We need to congratulate Stony Brook, they played very well.  They were extremely aggressive and physical.  We had to make shots, and we struggled shooting tonight.  When we made that run in the second half, I thought we were finally getting into a rhythm, but we just did not get it done.”- UAlbany head coach Will Brown

Recap: The UAlbany men’s basketball team was down 14 in the second half and pulled back to within one possession late, but was short in a 69-60 defeat vs. Stony Brook in the quarterfinal round of the America East Tournament.

Getting fast breaks for transition attacks, Stony Brook hit four of its first six field goals, including 3-for-3 from Elijah Olaniyi, to have an early 9-2 advantage in the first 2:44.

At 12-5 SBU, UAlbany held the Seawolves without points for nearly four minutes.  A 6-0 UAlbany, fueled in part by a Costa Anderson corner three, pulled UAlbany within one at 12-11 with 12:10 left in the 1st.

SBU pushed its advantage to 11 with a 12-2 run, finished by Junior Saintel scoring three baskets in a row for seven points, to push the visitors up 24-13.

After a timeout, UAlbany regrouped and focused on the play down low.  After Joe Cremo hit a kickout three to stop the SBU run, Travis Charles knocked down a jumper, then Alex Foster scored on two consecutive possessions.  Cremo added two more free throws to complete the 10-0 run and pull UAlbany within one at 24-23 by the last media of the 1st.

Using primarily free throws, Stony Brook got its lead back up to seven in the final minute of the 1st.  A putback layup by David Nichols with nine seconds left in the first made it 30-25 Stony Brook at the half.

With Akwasi Yeboah back on the floor, SBU scored points on its first five possessions of the second half.  A jumper from Jordan McKenzie push SBU up 42-30 with 16:25 left to play.  Later, the Seawolves went up by 14 at 47-33 with another three from Yeboah.

UAlbany drew contact on layup attempts and slowly chipped away using free throws.  After a two-minute span of no scoring from either side, Cremo buried two long three-pointers, then Nichols stole the ball and raced down for the layup to complete a 10-0 run and pull UAlbany within one at 49-48 SBU with under nine minutes left.

With the crowd roaring loud, the two sides exchanged baskets as SBU held the advantage.  A couple of layups by Jakue Petras were countered by free throws from Nichols and a putback layup from Devonte Campbell. UAlbany trailed 55-54 with 4:38 left.

UAlbany did not get a field goal for almost four minutes after, repairing its lead with more baskets in close quarters with Petras.  With 2:18 to go, Yeboah hit a three for a 64-55 Stony Brook lead.

Late points by Cremo and Nichols were not enough to get UAlbany back in the game.  Stony Brook took the victory 69-60.
