ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives has been selected by the Federación de Atletismo de Puerto Rico to coach Puerto Rico at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England. Vives had previously coached for Team USA in the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Senior Area Championships in Costa Rica in 2015.
“I am humbled and honored to serve as the Head Coach of the Puerto Rico Team at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham this week,” said Vives. “Puerto Rico is very special to me as the homeland of both of my parents, Paula Colon and the late Juan Vives Jr., and home to many family members. After the aftermath of Hurricane Maria the slogan of the Island is ‘Puerto Rico Se Levanta’ which means Puerto Rico will rise again. I am happy to play a small part in that process by lifting the hopes and dreams of the people through sport.”
Competing for Puerto Rico will be UAlbany almuna and volunteer assistant coach Grace Claxton. Claxton last competed at World Indoor Championships in 2016 in Portland, Oregon. There, she advanced to the semifinal round and placed 11th overall in the women’s 400m. Claxton will compete in the 400m again in Birmingham.
Claxton’s will race on Friday, March 2, at 12:10 p.m. local time (7:10 a.m. Eastern).
