Interim head coach Jessica Davos: "Our inexperience hurt us today. The team worked hard to battle back from a slow start, but ultimately it was our lack of execution under pressure that did us in. There were some bright spots to build on as we move forward and some good individual play from freshmen Kendra Harbinger and Kyla Zapolski in their first real game action. We'll be working hard this week to get things ironed out before we head to Syracuse on Thursday."
Powlin, an Inside Lacrosse Preseason DI Media All-America Honorable Mention, led the Great Danes with three points in the season-opener for both teams.
Erin Leghart started in goal for the Great Danes and stopped five shots.
UAlbany trailed 11-8 with 10 minutes to play before climbing within one goal. Tortora scored on a free-position shot with 8:05 to go to pull within 11-9, and Kyla Zapolski followed five minutes later with another free-position goal, this one in a player-up situation, to make the score 11-10.
But Yale’s Kayla Duperrouzel scored her third goal of the game with two minutes to play to close out the scoring.
The Great Danes trailed 6-3 at halftime after goals from Tortora, Powlin and Kaylee Rickert.
Tortora struck first, scoring on a free-position shot with 24 minutes left in the half to tie the game at 1. Powlin’s goal narrowed Yale’s lead to 3-2, and Rickert’s made the score 5-3 in favor of the Bulldogs.
UAlbany then scored three of the first four goals of the second half, including back-to-back goals from Paige Werlau and Harbinger to pull within 6-5. Powlin’s second-half goal made the score 7-6 Yale with 24:31 to play.
But Yale answered with a pair of player-up goals to extend its lead to 9-6 with 18:48 left.
The teams then traded two-goal runs, leaving the score 11-8 Yale before the Great Danes tried one more comeback.
The Great Danes play at Syracuse on Thursday. The Orange ranks No. 7 in this week's IWLCA Coaches' Poll.
