Recap

The University at Albany women’s basketball team visited UMBC for the second of two straight road games on Sunday after playing at UMass Lowell on Thursday.  Leading wire-to-wire, the Great Danes defeated UMBC 78-75 in a game that tightened up in the final seconds.  UAlbany snapped a two-game losing streak to the Retrievers, who were the only team the Danes did not beat last season during conference play.

Against the Riverhawks, UAlbany shot 0-12 to start the game and found themselves trailing by nine at halftime.  Sunday, against UMBC, the Great Danes got off to a quick start when Jessica Féquière hit a three pointer just 26 seconds into the game to give UAlbany a 3-0 lead.

Baltimore native Kyara Frames entered the game for the first time following the first quarter media timeout with UAlbany leading by six.  The Retrievers went on a 6-0 run to end the first and trailed UAlbany by just two.

The Great Danes used a 17-5 run midway through the second quarter to open a 13-point lead.  During the run, Frames hit two free throws to give UAlbany its first 10-point lead of the afternoon with 5:25 before halftime.  By the time the horn sounded, UMBC had nearly cut the lead in half and trailed 36-29.

In the first half, UAlbany leaned heavily on its bench, which outscored UMBC’s 16-5 through the first 20 minutes.  Frames led the Great Danes with seven points.

UMBC quickly brought the game within one after a quick 6-0 run in the first 43 seconds of the third quarter.  Mackenzie Tprcic next hit a three to extend UAlbany’s lead back to four.  Bose Aiyalogbe hit another three to put UAlbany up seven, and then a layup to put UAlbany up nine with 6:41 remaining in the quarter.

The Great Danes regained a 10-point lead after Chyanna Canada hit one of two free throws with 5:59 left in the third.  UAlbany matched its largested lead of the game with 1:28 left in the third after Tiana-Jo Carter hit a layup to put UAlbany up 58-45.

Midway through the fourth, UMBC brought the game back within eight before Carter hit a layup immediately following the media timeout to put UAlbany back up by double-digits.  UMBC rallied to come within four with 3:01 remaining in the game.  The Retrievers hit a three with 16.3 left to close within four again.  With 15.0 left, Trpcic hit two free throws putting UAlbany back up six.  On the ensuing inbounds play, UMBC hit a three, cutting the lead to three with 11.4 remaining.
