Short Story: The UAlbany women’s basketball wrapped its 3-0 road trip with an eighth-consecutive victory over Siena for the 2017 Albany Cup.

Coach Mac: "I thought our players came out and played from the third quarter to the end hard, just trying to stay focused as much as possible though some adversity there as the game went on.  I thought overall it was a fun game for us and I loved the way we rebounded the ball offensively, and I like the way we shot the three.  That was good on both ends."

Tiana-Jo Carter: "We come every day working hard and when we get to the Siena game we know it's going to be a fight.  To come in for my senior year and win it for the fourth-straight time is an amazing feeling, and we're trying to keep it going."

Recap

Playing their third straight game away from SEFCU Arena, and entering the game with a seven-game winning streak in the series, the University at Albany women’s basketball team defeated Siena 78-63 at the Times Union Center to clinch an eighth-straight Albany Cup.

Siena jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one minute of game time had elapsed.  UAlbany held its first lead with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter after Mackenzie Trpcic hit a layup.  A minute later, Tiana-Jo Carter took sole possession of fourth place in program history with her 128th career block.  The low-scoring, back-and-forth first quarter ended with Siena clinging to a one-point, 11-10 lead.

The offenses opened up in the second quarter.  With UAlbany trailing by three, Jessica Féquière hit back to back threes to put UAlbany up 19-16.  UAlbany continued to extend its lead, reaching double digits with two and a half minutes remaining in the half, thanks in part to shooting 7-9 from behind the arc for the quarter.

By halftime, the Great Danes had built a nine-point lead.  Trpcic and Féquière each had 11 points on 4-7 shooting and 3-4 from three.  The Great Danes had done most of their damage from behind the arc, shooting 8-16 in the first half.  Siena’s 8-10 shooting from the floor in the second quarter kept them in the game.

UAlbany used a 13-0 run late in the third quarter to extend their lead to 19.  Through three quarters, UAlbany had three players, Carter, Féquière, and Trpcic, score in double-figures.

One minute into the fourth, Patricia Conroy hit a three to join her teammates in double-figures with a career-high 10 points.  With just over five minutes remaining in the fourth, Siena had cut the lead to 11. Carter grabbed her 10th rebound with two minutes left to record her first double-double of the season.  UAlbany went on to secure its eighth straight Albany Cup by a final score of 78-63.

Carter ended the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading all players in both categories.  Trpcic added 16 points of her own, while Féquière scored 13 and Conroy scored 12.

Next: After playing five games in 13 days, the Great Danes will have a week before their next game, at home against St. Bonaventure.  It is the penultimate home game of the non-conference schedule, and the final game before the team leaves for Puerto Rico for games against Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois.
