Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, Defeats Wagner 89-44

Short Story: Jessica Féquière led three Great Danes in double figures past Wagner 89-44 for the team’s third consecutive victory. 

Coach Mac: “I loved the way we played tonight, with a little bit of heart for 40 minutes. It built a lot of confidence in all of our players because I was able to rotate everybody in and out. No matter who I put in, I don’t think our intensity dropped at all, so that was a nice team win for us.”

The University at Albany women's basketball team won its third straight game Wednesday night, dispatching the Wagner Seahawks by a final score of 89-44.

Last year, the Great Danes earned their first win on the road when they played at Wagner in their 10th game of the season. This year, UAlbany hosted Wagner seeking their third-straight victory.

The Great Danes came out firing in the first quarter. In the first 53 seconds, UAlbany scored four quick points, forcing Wagner to call a timeout. Before the halfway mark of the first quarter, the Danes were already up 16-5. Leading 25-11 as time wound down, freshman Patricia Conroy scored her first career field goal as time expired in the quarter.

UAlbany maintained the high intensity in the second quarter, starting with a 17-7 run that lasted most of the second 10 minutes. By halftime, the Danes led by 30 points.

UAlbany outscored Wagner 22-8 in points in the paint, 30-4 in points off of turnovers, 4-2 in second chance points, 4-0 in fast break points, and 26-4 in bench points. Freshman Kyara Frames scored a career-high nine points in the first half alone, and sophomore Mackenzie Trpcic dished six assists in just nine minutes of first-half game time.

Redshirt-senior Jessica Féquière grabbed her 300th career rebound three minutes into the third quarter. Wagner stepped up its own intensity, matching the Danes shot-for-shot for the beginning of the second half. After each team scored seven points in the third quarter, UAlbany ended the third on an 18-8 run.

The Danes’ run continued through the start of the fourth quarter, at which point UAlbany had a combined run of 26-10. UAlbany went on to win 89-44 to clinch their third straight victory.

For the full game, UAlbany outscored Wagner 54-20 in points in the pain, 44-13 in points off of turnovers, 14-6 in second chance points, 10-0 in fast break points, and 45-20 in bench points. UAlbany forced Wagner into committing 33 turnovers, and three Great Danes, Féquière, Heather Forster, and Alexi Schecter, scored in double figures. 

Next: Following a brief break for Thanksgiving, the Great Danes will return to action on Monday, November 27 at Central Connecticut State.
