Short Story: The UAlbany men’s cross country team placed third at conference championships behind All-Conference performances from Kyle Gronostaj and Ryan Udvadia

How it happened

  • Kyle Gronostaj paced UAlbany for the first time this season, finishing eighth in 25:05.1
  • Ryan Udvadia placed 11th in 25:23.3
  • Both Gronostaj and Udvadia earned Second Team All-Conference accolades
  • Gronostaj received the America East Elite 18 award for holding the highest GPA among the top finishers
  • The men’s finishing gap was 52.2 seconds
  • Stony Brook won the team title, and UMass Lowell’s Paul Hogan won the individual title


Two weeks after hosting the 51st Annual UAlbany XC Invitational, the University at Albany men’s cross country team kicked off the postseason with a return to Vermont for the America East XC Championships. After finishing third last year behind two top-five individual finishers, the men placed third once again with a total of 87 points.

Kyle Gronostaj paced the Great Danes for the first time this season, finishing eighth overall in 25:05.1. Ryan Udvadia, who has finished first for UAlbany in each meet so far this season, placed 11th in 25:23.3. Both Gronostaj and Udvadia earned All-Conference Second Team accolades.

Victor Ortiz Rivera placed 17th in 25:45.4. Jake Johnson placed 24th in 25:56.4. Rounding out the men’s scorers was Tyler Ranke, who placed 28th in 25:57.3.

The men’s tiebreakers were Jonathan Gay, who finished 40th in 26:20.7, and Christopher Perillo, who finished 51st in 26:45.8. Also competing for UAlbany was Calvin Butlak, who finished 67th in 27:10.5, and TJ Murray, who finished 71st in 27:38.3.

Stony Brook won the men’s title for the second consecutive year, placing four runners in the top 10 and all five in the top 12. UMass Lowell claimed the individual champion in Paul Hogan who finished with a time of 24:09.8. The Riverhawks placed three runners in the top four.

The men’s race featured a total of 81 competitors from all nine America East institutions. Gronostaj earned the men’s America East Elite 18 Award, recognizing the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the top finishers. 

Next: On Friday, November 10, UAlbany will head west to Buffalo for the NCAA DI Northeast Regional Championships.
