Quote: “Anytime you lose a playoff game, especially at home, is difficult.  I thought we were the better team in the second half, but Vermont fought and battled, they earned the victory they got tonight.  The team is disappointed, and I am right there with them, but we had a lot of growth this year.” – UAlbany head coach Nick Bochette

Recap: The 3-seed UAlbany women’s soccer team battled to tie the game in the second half, but fell victim to a last-minute goal that sent 6-seed Vermont to a 2-1 win in the America East Tournament quarterfinal round.

With play focusing in the midfield to begin, both sides took most of its early shots from long range.  UAlbany had two in a span of 100 seconds, with Vivian Vega’s being saved and one from Mariah Williams being wide.  UAlbany kept sending shots towards the cage as ones from Katie Gowing and Williams went high.  In the 36th minute, Sarah Martin back kicked a pass to a running Taylor Palmer for a shot from inside the box, scoring in the left post, giving Vermont a 1-0 lead, the eventual halftime score.

Vermont had the early push in half two, putting two shots wide in the opening minutes.  UAlbany kept attacking with set pieces, converting in the 63rd minute as Caroline Kopp arced a cross off a free kick to a running Gowing, who pushed the ball inside the right post for the score, tying the game at 1-1.  Vermont started getting off shots at the cage, with UAlbany holding off four Andrea Leitner saves.  Miranda Badovinac sent a low shot towards the left post, being saved by Coco Speckmaier in the 87th minute.  In the final minute, Brooke Jenkins kicked a long range line drive off the back of a UAlbany defender and into the net to make it 2-1 Vermont.  UAlbany attacked one final time with a corner kick in the final seconds, but the shot was stopped near the post by Speckmaier, giving Vermont the one-goal victory.

UAlbany had won the previous two America East Tournaments in 2015 and 2016.

Vermont will advance to take on 2-seed Binghamton in Vestal on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the semifinal round.
