Short Story:  The UAlbany men’s soccer team ended a two-game slide Friday night, earning the 10th win of the season in a 1-0 victory over their 2016 America East title game opponent Hartford.

Coach Gorman: “We’re very pleased to get a win here.  I thought we played well, especially in the first half.  We controlled the tempo and created a lot of good chances.  Hartford came back at us and fought hard the whole way through.  We maybe made it a little difficult on ourselves in the second half for a few moments but overall we have to be pleased with the shutout, the win, and the three points in the league.”

Playing in the penultimate home game of the 2017 regular season, the University at Albany men’s soccer team defeated Hartford 1-0 in a rematch of the 2016 America East championship game.

The Great Danes entered Friday’s game having dropped their last two, to New Hampshire and to UMBC.  Daniel Krutzen scored the game’s only goal on a free kick in the 34th minute.  With the ball about 24 yards out on the right side, Krutzen squared up and ripped a shot near post and out of the reach of the Hartford goalkeeper.

UAlbany dictated pace for most of the game, though Hartford applied some pressure during the second half.  The Great Danes applied pressure early, recording three shots and earning two corner kicks in a four-minute span before 10 minutes of game time had elapsed.  Hartford recorded its first shot in the 23rd minute, by which time UAlbany had already taken five.

After outshooting the Hawks 7-2 in the first half, the Danes outshot Hartford a further 6-3 in the second half, placing six of their total 13 shots on target.

UAlbany goalkeeper Danny Vitiello earned his sixth win and fifth shutout of the season.  In seven games at home so far this season, UAlbany has allowed four goals.

Next:  The Great Danes will celebrate Senior Night in their final home game of the 2017 regular season on Tuesday, October 24 against Hartwick.
