The University at Albany men’s soccer team started its first multigame road trip Wednesday when they visited Lafayette. The Great Danes, after playing to a scoreless tie through regulation, defeated the Leopards 1-0 in the Danes’ first overtime game of the season.
UAlbany pushed the pace all evening, outshooting Lafayette 5-1 in the first half and 5-3 in the second half. Further, the Danes drew 10 corner kicks throughout the game while Lafayette managed zero. Despite the opportunities, UAlbany was unable to find the back of the net.
The Danes finally broke through in the 95th minute. After senior Afonso Pinheiro drew the team’s 10th corner kick of the night, UAlbany’s third in two and a half minutes, Moosah Khanat played his attempt into open space on the far left side of the Lafayette box. Pinheiro recovered the ball and took a low, wild shot across the mouth of the goal. The shot bounced around in the sea of bodies before sophomore defender Adam Malekos came up with the ball and redirected his shot towards the net. The ball hit off the right post and over the line, ending the game with a 1-0 UAlbany victory.
Tonight was the fifth game between UAlbany and Lafayette. All five games in the series have been decided by a final score of 1-0.
With their first road victory of the season under their belts, the Great Danes will play a second consecutive road game with a trip Harvard on Sunday, September 24. UAlbany will return home to begin America East play against UMass Lowell on Saturday, September 30.
