Recap: The UAlbany volleyball team faced a couple of top tier opponents to open the Villanova Classic, being swept in three sets by each UConn and Princeton in Philadelphia.

Akuabata Okenwa led UAlbany in kills in both matches, hitting a combined .246 with 27 kills, 10 digs and four blocks.  Chloe Evering tallied 13 kills, seven digs and four blocks while Nicole Otero averaged five digs per set to total 30 on the day, adding eight assists.

In the first two sets against UConn, UAlbany was unable to overcome early 9-2 deficits.  Using kills from Okenwa and Evering, UAlbany got as close as 22-16 in set one before falling 25-17, then fell in set two 25-11.  Set three was a back and forth affair, with a UConn 5-0 run giving the Huskies a 14-10 advantage.  Okenwa got four kills in a span of seven points to pull UAlbany within one, and later, a Tatiana Tiangco kill got the Great Danes back to within one again at 20-19.  UConn won five of the last six to take set three 25-20 and win the match.

Against defending Ivy League champion Princeton, UAlbany got off to a 7-1 start, including two kills and two blocks from Danielle Tedesco.  Princeton took numerous pairs of points to tie the set, but UAlbany retook control at 17-14.  After numerous exchanges, UAlbany defended against set point and had its own chance at game point after an Evering-O’Connell combo block made it 26-25 UAlbany.  Princeton took the last three points to win 28-26.  Set two started with Princeton leading 6-1, then UAlbany battling back to tie at 6-6.  Back and forth the teams went until at 17-17, Princeton won the next six to go up 23-17, eventually taking the set 25-20.  UAlbany started up in the third set 9-1 off Otero’s serving, but lost its advantage with a 18-3 Princeton run.  Some late Tedesco kills were not enough as the Tigers won the third set 25-21 to win the match in three.

Tomorrow, UAlbany takes on tournament host Villanova at the Jake Nevin Field House at 2:30 p.m. to finish the invitational.
