Softball Takes Down No.1 Binghamton in AE Tournament

UAlbany Sports Information   05-11-2017

VESTAL, N.Y.— In extra innings, the University at Albany took down the No. 1 Binghamton Bearcats 4-3 in Game 4 of the America East Tournament. The Great Danes are now rolling on a seven-game win streak with an overall record of 25-15.

“What an exciting game to be a part of at the best time of the year. I'm so happy with how we competed on every play in every inning. We have been trying to get this out of this team all year long. We bent a little bit, but we held our ground and didn't break. Sarah made a huge defensive play in the seventh to kill their rally. Donna, Liz, and Sarah had huge clutch hits for us and every single player in the dugout contributed today,” said head coach Chris Cannata.

THE EXTRA-INNING RUN DOWN:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR… PLAYER OF THE GAME
Down by one run in the top of the 7th, the Great Danes needed to score to send the game into the bottom of the inning. With one out, Liz Snow was on deck. Snow battled off pitch after pitch while watching a few balls. As the Binghamton pitcher began to release an off-speed pitch down the middle of the plate, the entire stadium knew what was about to happen next. Snow locked and loaded on the ball and sent it sailing outside the stadium.

BARKEVICH AT IT AGAIN
In the top of the 8th, the silent but deadly right fielder Sarah Petzold doubled into left center to start the inning. Then McKenzie Bump knocked her over to third. Rookie, Kelly Barkevich was next on deck. Barkevich shot a hard ball to the short stop. The Bearcat shortstop cleanly fielded the ball and fired home, but she could not reach Petzold. The Danes took the lead in the game for the first time of the day.

SARAH “PUTOUT” PETZOLD
In the bottom of the 8th two Binghamton runners reached base on walks with no outs. The Bearcat's Crysti Eichner was chipping Verdolivo's pitches left and right. She eventually sent one deep foul into left field and Sarah Petzold was all over it. The runner on second tagged and sprinted to third. Petzold quickly transferred the ball from her glove and fired it to third base to retire the lead runner. Petzold then caught the final out of game with a routine fly ball in left field. Danes win 4-3.

FULL RECAP
Celeste Verdolivo (6-5) controlled the Great Danes defensively pitching a complete game. Verdolivo struck out five batters and allowed eight hits and three runs. The runs through out the game were very sporadic. No team scored more than one run per inning.

Binghamton scored first in the second inning from a home run by the freshman catcher, Sara Herkowitz. Countering quick in the top of the third, the Great Danes' second baseman, Shaye Swiatek claimed her sport on first with a single up the middle. Swiatek was then moved over by teammate, Alyiah Wade. With two runners on base and no outs, Donna Conrad slapped a double into left field to put a run on the board (1-1).

Binghamton then claimed the lead once again. This time it was Kate Richard who homered (2-1). In the top of the 5th, Donna Conrad was the name everyone was cheering about. Tying the score, Conrad shot a home run ball deep over right center (2-2). However, Binghamton countered immediately in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly (3-2).

Going into the 7th inning, the Great Dane momentum started rolling. It was Liz Snow who saved the Danes with an out-of-the-park home run to send the game into extra-innings. Leaving Binghamton defenseless, Sarah Petzold connected with a solid double in the top of the 8th. Bump then moved her over with Barkevich hitting in the winning run. In the bottom of the inning, Sarah Petzold sealed the deal recording all three outs.

Up next in the America East Tournament:
The University at Albany will take on No. 2 Maine at 11 AM in the winners bracket.
The winner of that game will move to the Championship Round on Saturday, May 13th.
The loser of that game will play an elimination game tomorrow at 4 PM.
