ALBANY, N.Y.—UAlbany Softball celebrated their four seniors, Caitlin Cooper, Liz Snow, Mackenzie Cleary, and Kayla Bailey this afternoon with a 6-5 win over Hartford. UAlbany's seniors were recognized for their achievements at the University in the past four years.
“Senior day is always a very tough day for us as coaches. I was happy that we were able to hold on today and win all three games and be able to celebrate that with our four seniors and their families. But, the sad part of this day, is realizing that we are getting close to saying goodbye to another group of kids that have been part of our family for the last four years. Liz, Coop, Kayla and MC have been a great bunch of kids to coach, but they are also great people that I know are going to be successful in the next chapter of their lives,” said head coach Chris Cannata.
All three seniors were placed in the starting lineup, and junior Devin Durando led them in the circle. Durando struck out five batters and allowed four earned runs.
In the bottom of the first inning, Kelly Spear was walked. Then Liz Snow forced a Hartford error allowing Spear to score.
UAlbany's bats came alive in the fourth under the reign of Sarah Petzold. Mackenzie Cleary started the inning off looking at four balls to claim first base. Then Shaye Swiatek singled up the middle. With an error from Hartford's fist baseman, Kayla Bailey joined Cleary and Swiatek to load the bases. It all came down to Sarah Petzoldwho hit a grand slam shot clearing the bases. At the end of the second UAlbany led Hartford 5-0.
In the bottom of the 6th one more run was added. Cleary hit a double through the left side then Cooper singled for her teammate to score.
In the top of the 7th the Great Danes needed three outs to end the game but Hartford proved to be relentless. Hartford knocked in five runs including two back-to-back homeruns. The Great Danes were able to get the final three outs to make the ending score 6-5 UAlbany.
The Great Danes will be back next Tuesday May 2nd at 2 P.M. against the Binghamton Bearcats. This is UAlbany's final home game of the season that was rescheduled from this past Wednesday.
