UAlbany Sports Information   04-12-2017

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Another walk-off seventh inning by a UAlbany opponent leaves the Great Danes trailing 0-2 in the doubleheader against Binghamton. A close first game left UAlbany trailing 6-5 and the second game trailing 4-0. In conference play, this moves UAlbany to 1-6 and Binghamton to 4-0.

GAME 1 (6-5 L)

UAlbany started the game by switching around a few key players to create a new line-up they had never used before. Celeste Verdolivo (5-6) took the loss for the Danes and pitched all seven innings. The Great Danes were able to move their bats more than Binghamton in the first game with 11 total hits compared to the Bearcats’ 7.

In the first inning, Donna Conrad and Chelsea Henige reached third and first respectively on a single and a fielder’s choice. It was Kelly Barkevich that came to the rescue and homered into the left field sending in three runs.

Binghamton then countered in the second with two runs from a combination of a walk, a single, and a double.

In the top of the third, three singles and a fielder’s choice created energy for the Great Danes from Donna Conrad, Elizabeth Snow, Chelsea Henige, and Kelly Barkevich. However, it was not until McKenzie Bump’s single to right field that scored a run (4-4). The Great Danes were then able to pull ahead in the top of the fifth with another RBI from Bump (5-4).
The Bearcats were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth or sixth inning. However, after the Great Danes did not score in the top of the 7th, Binghamton picked up the pace. With a runner sitting on third, Binghamton sent a sacrifice to centerfield allowing the runner to tag and tie the score 5-5. UAlbany needed one out to send the game into extra innings, but the Binghamton batter singled to the shortstop creating two back to back Great Dane errors. The final score read 6-5 in favor of the Bearcats.

GAME 2 (4-0 L)

Devin Durando (3-2) pitched for the Great Danes in game two. However, the bats retracted for UAlbany as they were only able to produce one hit from an Aliyah Wade bunt. Changing up the Dane’s line-up once again, Binghamton was the first to take control in the second game. In the bottom of the second the Bearcats placed two runners on base from a walk and a single. Then, Binghamton hit a single that led to an error from the Great Dane shortstop allowing both runners on base to score. The third run of the inning was from an electric RBI single. Binghamton led 3-0 with all runs unearned.

The 4th and final run of the game came from the third inning which was created by two hits and a walk from Binghamton.

The Great Danes will next face UMBC at home this Friday 4/14 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM and 3 PM.
