Softball Splits with UMass Lowell

LOWELL, M.A.— UAlbany Softball faced UMass Lowell this afternoon taking only one game of the doubleheader (L 6-9, W 4-2). This moves the University at Albany’s overall record to 16-10 and their conference record to 1-3.

GAME 1 (6-9)

In this high scoring matchup, Bailey Turner (5-5) took the mound pitching the first four innings. UAlbany was able to get on the board first. Aliyah Wade walked to first base. When she stole second, UMass Lowell’s catcher overthrew the ball allowing Wade to stand on third. Next up, Donna Conrad flied out to left field, allowing Wade to tag and score. The Great Danes led 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, the River Hawks flew past the Danes scoring three runs. UMass Lowell was able to take advantage of two walks and a Great Dane error.

In the third inning, the Great Danes battled back with lead-off batter, Sarah Petzold’s homerun (2-3 Lowell). Then with two outs, the Great Danes went on a four-hit run. Aliyah Wade took her place on first base with a single to the short stop. Following Wade’s lead, Donna Conrad singled to center field. Then, clean-up batter Liz Snow fulfilled her duties hitting a two-base shot in center field to score both Wade and Conrad (4-3). Chelsea Henige was smart at the plate and was walked. The last hit of the inning came from senior Mackenzie Cleary who sent a single up the middle to score Snow (5-3).

UMass Lowell began to chip away at UAlbany’s lead, scoring one run in the fourth inning and four runs in the bottom of the fifth (5-8). Celester Verdolivo came into relieve Turner in the top of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Danes regained focus under senior leadership by Cleary. Cleary started off the inning with a double into left field. She was able to advance to third from an illegal pitch by UMass Lowell’s pitcher. Next up, Addy Simpson grounded out to the short stop sending in Cleary (6-8).

The River Hawks then nailed a ball over the fence to top off their score 6-9. Although the Great Danes were able to add hits to the box score in the top of the seventh, they were not able to convert them to runs.

GAME 2 (4-2)

Devin Durando (3-1) was awarded the win for UAlbany striking out seven River Hawks in six innings.

Both UMass Lowell and UAlbany were unable to contribute any runs to the score in the first three innings.

It was not until the fourth inning, where UAlbany was able to capitalize. The Great had three-back to back singles by Snow, Henige, and Kelly Barkevich. With the bases loaded, Addy Simpson hit a ball into left field causing the fielder to make an error scoring all three runners on base. Shaye Swiatek then hit Simpson in making the score 4-0.

In the top of the fifth, UMass Lowell was able to puts runs on the board by scoring two runs due to a walk and two hits. However, this fifth inning comeback was not enough to match the Great Danes. Both teams were unable to score in the sixth or seventh innings make the final score 4-2.


Tomorrow the Great Danes will face UMass Lowell again for a single game at 12 P.M. to end the series.
