Softball Sweeps Cornell in Doubleheader

UAlbany Sports Information   04-05-2017

ALBANY, N.Y.—Racking up 18 hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader, the University at Albany softball team overcame Cornell 9-0 and 5-1. With the wins, the Great Danes improved their record to 15-9 on the season.

“All of our pitchers did a really nice job combining to hold Cornell to just one run on the day. When we did make a mistake defensively, the pitchers picked us up,” said Head Coach Chris Cannata.

Bailey Turner (5-4) earned the win in the first game holding Cornell to two hits. Switching it up in the second, Celeste Verdolivo (5-4) took the win striking out four batters and allowing only one hit.

“Overall, a good day at the plate and in the field. Our challenge is to take another step forward this weekend in our conference series against Lowell,” said Cannata.

GAME 1 (9-0 in 5 Innings)

McKenzie Bump started the Great Danes off with a single to the left side. Following behind, Aliyah Wade reached first base on a walk. Then Donna Conrad grounded out to first base, but was able to advance the runners. Up next, Liz Snow sent Bump home with a single to right side. With only one out, Snow started to steal second and Cornell’s catcher threw down to the short stop. On the throw, Aliyah Wade took off for home. Both runners were called safe. The Danes led the Big Red 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Danes were hungry for more. Mackenzie Cleary and Shaye Swiatek led off the Great Danes both hitting singles. Then Kayla Bailey caused confusion for Cornell hitting a ball to the shortstop. On a fielder’s choice the Cornell shortstop attempted to tag the runner out but missed loading the bases. Bump was then walked scoring Cleary. Clean-up hitter, Snow sent two runners home with a deep double to left field. Chelsea Henige scored the final runs of the inning with a single to center field that scored both runners on base, Bump and Snow.

In the third inning an additional run was scored through smart base-running by Cleary making the score 8-0.

Cornell made a pitching change in the fourth, yet the Great Danes continued to add to their lead. The last run of the game came from Elizabeth Snow who blasted a home run ball over the fence ending the game with a final score of 9-0.

GAME 2 (5-1)

Donna Conrad was ready for another win and smashed a shot over the fence to start the first game with a homerun. Conrad’s hit had a line-drive trajectory, but it was just high enough to clear the fence.

UAlbany had a big third inning starting off with Addy Simpson and McKenzie Bump singles. Then Aliyah Wade laid down a bunt and loaded the bases. Conrad sent a sacrifice fly into left field to score Simpson. Next up, Snow smacked a triple into left field scoring both runners on base. With one out, Chelsea Henige grounded out to score Snow. The Great Danes led the Big Red 5-0.

Neither team was able to score again until the 7th inning when Cornell’s first baseman hit a homerun to put the Big Red on the board.

Kelly Barkevich closed out the game by catching a pop-up at first base.

Up next, the Great Danes will travel to UMass Lowell on Saturday April 9th for a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM and Sunday April 10th for a single game beginning at 12 PM.
