Softball Drops Two Against Central Connecticut State
NEW BRITAIN, CT-- After relocating UAlbany Softball’s season home opener against Central Connecticut State to CCSU’s home field, UAlbany lost both games of the double header in five innings (5-13 and 1-9).
“It was a cold and miserable day that both teams had to play in, but we were the only team that acted like the weather affected us,” said Head Coach Chris Cannata.
“We played bad defensively and when you add 17 walks to the mix you aren't going to beat anybody. We need to regroup and have a good week of practice to get ready for conference next weekend.”
GAME 1 (L 5-13)
The Great Danes took an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning creating a strong presence at CCSU. Aliyah Wade started off the inning taking her spot on first base with a walk. Next up, McKenzie Bump hit a three-base shot down the right field line to score Wade. Donna Conrad then sent in Bump with a solid single to center field. Back-to-back doubles by Elizabeth Snow and Chelsea Henige added two more runs to the board making the score 4-0. Kelly Spear grounded out sending Henige to third, and then Mackenzie Cleary came in with a clutch single to send Henige home (5-0).
In the bottom of the first, the Blue Devils were quick to answer with a homerun by lead off batter, Alexis Debrosse. The Great Danes then gave two back-to-back batters free bases with walks. A Blue Devil single then advanced another base runner home (5-2). Central Connecticut added an additional run in the second inning by a combination of a double, a bunt, and a sacrifice fly. (5-3).
The Blue Devils took the lead from the Great Danes in the third scoring four runs, which included another homerun from Debrosse (5-7).
UAlbany was unable to produce another hit until the fifth inning, but Aliyah Wade was left on base.
In the bottom of the fifth, Central Connecticut ended the game with an additional six runs. One of the runs scored was from Debrosse’s third homerun of the game.
The final score of the first game was 5-13 in favor of the Blue Devils. UAlbany made two pitching changes and one error.
GAME 2 (L 1-9)
Scoring for Central Connecticut began early in the bottom of the first inning. The combination of one CCSU hit, two Great Dane errors, three walks, and a wild pitch led the Blue Devils to score four runs.
In the third inning, Central Connecticut was able to score another run. The first batter was sent on first base by a walk and was hit in by a double down the left field line.
UAlbany was able to score in the fourth inning. Bump walked to first base and Snow followed right behind. Henige singled to right field forcing an error to score Bump. The Great Danes trailed CCSU (1-5).
Remaining scoreless in the fourth, Central Connecticut showed their dominance in the fifth. They scored an additional four runs to end the game (1-9), leaving three on base with only two outs.
Up next, the Great Danes are scheduled to play Siena at home on Wed, March 29th at 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM.
