Baseball Earns Sweep Of Hofstra

UAlbany Sports Information   03-19-2017

SALEM, Va. – After taking both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against Hofstra in Virginia, the University at Albany baseball team (7-5) completed the sweep of the Pride (4-13) Sunday, winning the third game of the series 3-1.

“We had a tremendous game on the mound today,” said head coach Jon Mueller.  “Kenny McLean was very good, J.T. Genovese came in and gave us some life, and Dom closed it out at the end.  We faced a very good lefty; Rooney is awfully good, he’s going to beat a lot of people this year.  I thought we put together a good game plan.  We got his pitch count up, scrapped together some runs, and played good defense.  This weekend was really encouraging and we’re looking forward to next weekend.”

Sunday’s game was the lowest scoring of the series, after the teams combined for 13 runs in the first game and seven in the second.  Playing as the road team on Sunday, UAlbany scored first in the top of the second inning when Kenny Hayden drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kyle Sacks.

The next three innings went scoreless before UAlbany added another run in the top of the sixth, when Marc Wangenstein hit an RBI triple.  Hofstra scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the top of the ninth, UAlbany scored once more on a sacrifice fly from Nick Kondo, bringing the final score to 3-1.

UAlbany had three players hit one RBI each to account for the Danes three runs.  The Great Danes’ starter, Kenny McLean, lasted 6.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.  In relief, J.T. Genovese gave up two hits and recorded two strikeouts.  Dominic Savino earned his second save of the weekend facing one batter in the bottom of the ninth.

Next, UAlbany will play a doubleheader at Saint Peter’s on Tuesday.  Afterwards, the Danes will open America East play on the road this weekend with a three-game set at UMBC.
