UAlbany Communications and Marketing Softball's 7-2 Win Over Howard Sends UAlbany 4-1 in Puerto Rico UAlbany Sports Information 03-12-2017 Related Links Howard Box Score Sign Up For Free Email Updates SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO— Closing out the final game of the Puerto Rico Classico, UAlbany’s 7-2 win over Howard led the Great Danes to a 4-1 record for the tournament, and an overall record of 11-5 for the season. “Today's win against Howard was a much better showing than yesterday and it was a high point to finish the tournament at 4-1. It's been a great experience for the team being down here and playing in this tournament. This team just seems to find a way to win and we are going to keep working hard and getting better as the season goes on,” said head coach Cannata. Devin Durando was the starting pitcher for the Great Danes, striking out seven batters with two earned runs. UAlbany started off the game strong earning the first runs of the game in the second inning. Liz Snow had the first UAlbany hit of the game with a double to the left side. Next, Chelsea Henige singled and advanced Snow to third base. Kelly Barkevich was up next loading the bases as she was walked by Howard’s pitcher. However, the Great Danes were picked-off at third, leaving runners on first and second. The Great Danes were able to quickly recover with another walk from Howard placing Kelly Spear on first. With a powerful swing from freshman Addy Simpson she shot a double into center field scoring two UAlbany runs. Howard’s pitcher then threw a wild-pitch and Spear took advantage, scoring the final run of the inning with the Great Danes leading 3-0. In the 3rd inning the Great Danes continued their momentum adding another three runs to the board. Aliyah Wade started off the inning with a walk and stole second right after. Next, Donna Conrad flied out to centerfield advancing Wade to third base. Snow quickly forced a Howard error claiming her spot on third base, allowing Wade to score. The next two batters, Henige and Barkevich walked. In the midst, Snow took advantage and scored (5-0). Howard had a pitching change mid-inning, yet UAlbany scored another run from Addy Simpson’s single RBI scoring Barkevich. Howard countered a few Great Dane runs in the 6th inning. With a single, a sacrifice fly, a walk, and a couple of wild pitches Howard scored two runs (6-2). In the bottom of the inning, Kayla Bailey singled and quickly stole second. Bailey continued to advance on another wild pitch from Howard. Then, freshman Amanda Mosall stepped up to the plate swinging at her first collegiate hit with a single to the left side to score Bailey. The Great Danes held off Howard in the top of the 7th as Caitlin Cooper stepped in to pitch mid-inning with a final score of 7-2 in favor of UAlbany. The Great Danes will be back next Friday at the Capital Invite in Washington D.C.
