STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.The UAlbany women’s lacrosse team got back into the win column on Thursday night on Staten Island, taking down defending Northeast Conference champion Wagner 19-5.

UAlbany (3-3) used four runs of at least 3-0, including eight in a row starting towards the end of the first half, to defeat Wagner (0-5).  19 goals for UAlbany equals the highest offensive output of the season, tying that mark of February 13th vs. St. Bonaventure.

“I thought we spread the ball around and worked in some new wrinkles,” said UAlbany head coach John Battaglino. “We are starting to get a better sense of ourselves and what we want to accomplish.  Sarah Martin did a great job all over the field with draw controls and on attack, and Emma Powlin had some nice takes as well.

Four players finished with at least three goals, with three tallying at least five points.  UAlbany outshot Wagner 35-15, including 15-3 in the second half, and grabbed 18 draw controls to Wagner’s seven.

Sarah Martin completed the game with five goals, an assist and 10 draw controls.  Dakotah Savitcheff also had five goals, converting both free position shots.  Emma Powlin had the first two goals of the game, concluding with three goals and two assists while Emily Mizer notched three goals and two caused turnovers.

In goal, Erin Leghart started and earned the win, saving four shots on seven shots on goal in 39:01 of play.  Georgia Schneidereith finished the game, saving one shot.

For Wagner, Lauren Ednie had three of the team’s five goals, adding three caused turnovers.  Kelsey Fee had the loss in goal with three saves and 11 goals allowed in the opening 35:08.

After Mizer caused a turnover on defense, Powlin notched her first goal, adding her next after a Martin draw control.  Mizer again started a possession by ending a Wagner clear, drawing a foul and converting a free position goal for a 3-0 UAlbany lead 5:29 in.

An exchange of goals started another run for UAlbany. Mizer added a putback goal and Martin scored not long after Sam Tortora forced a turnover on a Wagner clear, making it 7-1 UAlbany with 14:22 remaining in the 1st.  The sides traded more goals, with Powlin adding her third goal as UAlbany led 9-3 at the half.

Before Wagner even got possession in the second half, UAlbany added six goals in the period’s first 8:39, including two by Savitcheff from Powlin, to force the running clock.  A free position goal for Savitcheff later completed the 8-0 run and put UAlbany ahead 16-3 with 18:09 left to play.

Wagner added the next two goals, but UAlbany’s lead proved triumphant.  After goals from Savitcheff and Martin, Sara Grapevine added the final one for UAlbany with 1:01 left as the Great Danes took the victory 19-5 on Staten Island.

UAlbany will play its next game in Ithaca, taking on Cornell on Wednesday, March 15th at 5 p.m.
