Baseball Closes Tidelands With 9-7 Loss To Winthrop

CONWAY, S.C. – The University at Albany baseball program (3-4) wrapped up play at the Tidelands Health Classic Sunday with a rematch against Winthrop (5-6).  Friday, in their second game of the day, the Great Danes walked off 3-2 against the Eagles.  On Sunday, playing at Field at Pelicans Park, and ultimately fell by a score of 9-7.

“We dug ourselves a big hole to climb out of today,” said head coach Jon Mueller.  “The guys continued to grind and we were within striking distance late.”

UAlbany scored first in the top of the second on an RBI single from Matt Codispoti that scored Travis Collins from second base.  Winthrop responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and then four more in the bottom of the third.

With throw added one run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.  In the top of the seventh, UAlbany scored six runs to close the game to two.  The inning started with a leadoff triple from Connor Powers, followed by an RBI double from Marc Wangenstein.  Collins hit an RBI single in the next at-bat, after which Winthrop brought in a new pitcher.  Codispoti hit a single to left, pushing Collins to second.  The next batter, Patrick Lagravinese grounded out to first, but the runners were able to advance.  The bases were loading in the next at-bat when Kevin Donati drew a walk.  The next batter, Kyle Sacks, was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run.  A wild pitch in the next at bat saw another run cross the plate.  Finally, Evan Harasta hit a two-RBI single to left, scoring Sacks and Donati.  Winthrop’s second pitching change of the inning resulting in a ground out by Powers who had come back up to bat.

The remainder of the game would continue on without another score, giving Winthrop a 9-7 victory.  UAlbany scored seven runs on seven hits and committed two errors.  Winthrop scored nine runs on 14 hits and committed one error.

Collins and Codispoti each recorded two hits.  Harasta led the team with two RBIs.  Collins recorded two runs.  UAlbany’s starting pitcher, J.T. Genovese, lasted 2.2 innings, striking out two and giving up six runs.  Charlie Peltz, Joe Romero, David Hutchison, and Hunter Torres combined for the next five innings, allowing three runs and striking out one.  Dominic Savino pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game, giving up two hits.

“Overall we played competitively in three of the games and had contributions from a number of guys,” said Mueller.  “We will rest up and turn our attention to NYIT next weekend.”

Next, the Great Danes will visit NYIT for two games on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11.
