CONWAY, S.C. – After splitting their tournament-opening double-header against San Francisco and Winthrop on Friday at the Tidelands Health Classic, the University at Albany baseball program (3-3) was slated for just one game on Saturday; against defending national champion and tournament host Coastal Carolina (8-5). The Great Danes fell to the Chanticleers by a score of 14-0.
The Great Danes held tough with Coastal early in the game. The Chanticleers scored in the bottom of the first inning, and then added two more runs in the bottom of the third after a scoreless second. A scoreless fourth led to an opening of the floodgates for Coastal, who scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth, and then five more in the bottom of the sixth.
The Great Danes did not advance past second base all day. Their first, best scoring chance came in the third inning when Wangenstein led off with a single through the left side, and then stole second two batters later. In the sixth inning, the Great Danes worked leadoff walks from Patrick Lagravinese and Kevin Donati before the next three batters were retired in order.
UAlbany will wrap up play at Tidelands on Sunday with a rematch against Winthrop. The Danes walked off against the Eagles Friday night 3-2. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
