Bailey's Walk-Off RBI Sends UAlbany 2-0 at North Florida Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, FL-- UAlbany Softball takes two on day two of the North Florida Invitational. The Great Danes have an overall record of 6-4.

“After playing as bad as I've seen us play yesterday, I am really proud of how we bounced back in every way today. We got two great pitching performances from Bailey and Celeste and the defense did a nice job all day. We need to take another step forward tomorrow and finish out the weekend with another win,” said Head Coach Chris Cannata.

LA SALLE (4-2)

Bailey Turner took her second win in the circle this season pitching all 7 innings, striking out 6 batters.

UAlbany took control in the second inning scoring two runs, with a double from Chelsea Henige and a single down the left field line by Mackenzie Cleary.

The Explorers countered with a run in both the 3rd and 4th inning with compiling hits. UAlbany’s third baseman, McKenzie Bump made a double play to end the third.

The Great Danes looked to get ahead in the 6th inning batting in two more runs making the score (4-2). In the 6th, Elizabeth Snow took it upon herself to make sure UAlbany scored swinging for a homerun, her second of the tournament. Henige then doubled to center field and Kayla Bailey stepped in to pinch run. Joining Bailey, Mackenzie Cleary reached first base on a walk. Then, with a Sarah Petzold single Bailey advanced home.

Defensively, Alexa Corben had six putouts and one assist, while Cleary had eight putouts and one assist.

With a scoreless 7th inning, the Great Danes took the win (4-2).

WESTERN CAROLINA (1-0)

Against Western Carolina, Celeste Verdolivo took the mound making her pitching record for the 2017 season 2-2. Verdolivo pitched all 8 innings allowing only four hits and striking out four batters.

UAlbany and Western Carolina both went scoreless for all seven innings of regulation.

In the first seven innings there were only three Great Dane hits by Kelly Spear (single in 3rd), Kayla Bailey (single in 6th), and Liz Snow (double in 7th).

In extra innings, a runner starts on second base. UAlbany’s Mackenzie Cleary was positioned on second. Spear started the inning with a single to center field, advancing Cleary to third. Spear then stole second leaving runners on second and third. Addy Simpson was up next and she reached first on a fielder’s choice. Cleary was out at third, but Spear advanced on the throw. Finally, Kayla Bailey stepped up and singled to the catcher. Spear advanced home on the walk-off RBI.

UAlbany closes out the North Florida Invitational tomorrow with one game against Mount St. Mary’s- MD at 12:15 PM.
