“We executed a bit better in the second quarter,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr, who earned his 150th career win with the program. “TD [Ierlan] was great on the faceoffs, and JD [Colarusso] got us going with his saves.”

UAlbany dominated in faceoffs, winning 20-of-29, with TD Ierlan winning all 20 off 28 attempts, adding 10 ground balls.  As a team, the Great Danes outshot UMass 49-40.

“We played well out there; we got pushed early by UMass, but we stuck together and got the win,” said Fields.

For UMass, Dan Muller and Buddy Carr each had two goals.  D.J. Smith got the defeat in goal with 14 saves in the opening 53:31 of play.

UAlbany struck first in the opening minute as Fields scored on a rip into the left corner.  UMass tied it up from St. Laurent, then UAlbany got the lead back off a catch and shoot from Josh Egan to Drake.  Seven minutes passed without a score, then Dan Spencer scored to even the game up.  Fields added another highlight reel goal, pushing through double team and using a shovel shot for the goal.  Again UMass evened up, then again UAlbany went ahead as Justin Reh got the catch and shoot from Fields, putting UAlbany up 4-3 after one quarter.

After an exchange of goals, UAlbany pounced on UMass with six goals to finish the quarter, while Colarusso saved six Minutemen shots in that period.  Justin Reh netted three in a row, including two where he helped break the UMass ride and ending on a pass from brother Troy Reh.  Fields emerged from behind the cage for a gorund ball goal unassisted next, then John Glancy found Jakob Patterson in front of the cage for the shot and score.  Drake caught a deflected ball and fired it into the net for a goal, making it 11-4, the eventual halftime score.

UAlbany kept going into the 3rd quarter as Patterson rolled off a defender to score to push UAlbany’s lead to eight.  UMass got the next two in the following six minutes.  Sean Eccles got a goal back on a rocket shot from 12 meters out to put UAlbany up 13-6, with neither team scoring in the final 4:54 of the 3rd.

Into the fourth, Adam Osika scored quickly after getting separation from a defender, then Drake added his fourth goal, getting a pass from a double teamed Eli Lasda. UAlbany added two more goals with Osika and Drake to counter UMass’s score, giving UAlbany the 17-8 win.
