UAlbany Sports Information   02-26-2017

MADEIRA BEACH, F.L.- UAlbany closed out the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational with an overall record of 4-2, falling to both Harvard and Loyola-Chicago on day three.

“Both Bailey and Celeste pitched well enough to win today.  Our defense gave the other team way too many opportunities.” said Head Coach Chris Cannata.

HARVARD (4-8)

Against Harvard, UAlbany took an early 1st inning lead. Lead-off batter, McKenzie Bump reached first base on a walk and advanced to second with an Aliyah Wade single to short stop. Power hitter, Liz Snow, was then walked and UAlbany occupied all the bases. With pitching trouble from Harvard, Donna Conrad then walked scoring a run. Harvard’s Sarah Smith stepped into the circle replacing Taylor Cabe, and then walked Henige scoring another UAlbany run (2-0). Kelly Spear had an RBI scoring the final run of the inning and UAlbany led 3-0.

Harvard bounced back quickly with two UAlbany errors. With one runner on base, Harvard’s Maddy Kaplan hit a double to left center field. Sarah Petzold and McKenzie Bump teamed up to make a great defensive play tagging sophomore Rhianna Rich before she touched the bag. Shaye Swiatek fielded a grounder and threw it to Mackenzie Cleary on 1st base. With two outs and a runner on third, Harvard scored at the expense of a Great Dane error.

In the bottom of the second inning, Harvard added four runs the board with a total of five hits (3-5). With two additional Great Dane errors, Harvard then added two more runs to their score in the 4th inning (3-7).

UAlbany started making connection again in the fifth inning with three hits. Snow started the spark with a double to left center, followed by Donna Conrad’s single to second base. Chelsea Henige continued the hit streak and singled to left center scoring Snow.

Harvard matched UAlbany’s run in the 6th inning with three hits making the score (8-4). Harvard closed out the game in the top of the 7th inning with three Great Dane batters.

LOYOLA-CHICAGO (0-4)

Celeste Verdolivo returned to the circle for the Great Danes for the 6th game of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational against Loyola-Chicago. Verdolivo struck out an impressive total of nine batters and allowed one walk.

Loyola began to take control of the game in the third inning. The first batter reached second base on a Great Dane error. With two consecutive hits, Loyola crossed the plate with two more batters.

With little bat action from either team in the fourth inning, Loyola-Chicago added more runs to board in the 5th. Rambler, Jordyn Cordell reached first base with a single to right field. Senior Jacquelyn Murphy then stepped up to the plate and rounded the bases after a homerun shot (0-4).

UAlbany was unable to gerenate more hits in this game, leaving the final score 0-4 in favor of Loyola-Chicago. Wade recorded three put outs in centerfield and Kelly Barkevich recorded four on first base.

“Overall I'm happy with what I saw all weekend.  We need to make some adjustments in the next two practices and get ourselves moving in the right direction before we play again next weekend,” said Cannata.

Next weekend the Great Danes travel to Jacksonville, F.L. to compete in the North Florida Invitational. UAlbany will take the field on Friday, March 3rd v. Mount St. Mary College at 12:15 p.m.
