UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.Sarah Martin’s five points were not enough as the UAlbany women’s lacrosse team fell in the 2017 opener at #7/7 Penn State 20-9 on Saturday afternoon.

UAlbany (0-1) used a 5-0 run to rally back to within one near the start of the second half.  Penn State (1-0) put together streaks of 5-0 and 7-0 in the second half to pull away from the Great Danes.

Martin led all Great Danes with three goals, two assists and a pair of draw controls.  Emma Powlin had a two goal game while Sam Tortora and Jordyn Marr netted their first-ever collegiate goals, the former adding two assists.  Georgia Schneidereith got the loss in her first college game, saving 11 shots.

For Penn State, Madison Carter had six goals and 10 draw controls, with Steph Lazo finishing with five goals and seven assists.  Cat Rainone picked up the win in goal with seven saves.

Following a Lazo goal in the opening minutes, O’Donnell scored three goals in a row in a span of four minutes.  UAlbany called a timeout, leading to Martin winning a draw and finding Kenzie Neal for the shot and score, making it 4-1 Penn State with 18:08 left in the 1st.

Penn State built its lead with three straight goals for a 7-1 advantage.  Powlin stopped the run with a goal quickly after a draw control, then Sierra McIver grabbed the ball off a turnover, leading to Martin scoring off a catch and shoot from Tortora.  The offensive process repeated with Tortura to Martin to set the eventual halftime score at 7-5.

Megan Mikolajek forced a turnover off a PSU draw control to open the 2nd half.  The ball got to Powlin, who raced to the cage for the score, pulling UAlbany within one at 7-6 in the opening minute of second.

The home team kept the lead with the next five goals to go up 12-6, including two each from Lazo and O’Donnell, with 19:40 left to play.

Following an exchange of goals, Martin converted a free position shot, then set up Marr for a goal to get UAlbany back with four at 13-9 with just over 13 minutes left.

Despite looks at the cage by Powlin and Martin, UAlbany could not get back on the scoreboard the rest of the game.  The Nittany Lions netted the final seven goals of the game to pick up the 20-9 victory.

UAlbany’s next game will be a home contest in Queensbury as the Great Danes take on St. Bonaventure on Monday, February 13th at noon.
