ALBANY, N.Y. – Though a sellout crowd of 4,538 was cheering on the UAlbany men’s basketball team for the 2017 Big Purple Growl, the Great Danes were not able to come back from a second half deficit and fell to Stony Brook 72-65 on Saturday night.

Up one at the break, UAlbany (14-11, 5-5 AE) was outscored 26-13 by Stony Brook (13-10, 8-2 AE) in the first 12 minutes of the second half.  UAlbany got back to within four with a couple of Dallas Ennema threes with under a minute to go, but was not able to bridge the gap.

‘Stony Brook’s poise and maturity showed,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown. “I thought Stony Brook did a good job not allowing us to get into any offensive rhythm or flow, and we didn’t respond to the pressure.”

UAlbany had four players score in double digits in a game that saw 11 lead changes.

Greig Stire led UAlbany in scoring for the first time this season with 15 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line, and six rebounds.  Joe Cremo finished with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds while Devonte Campbell notched 12 points, six rebounds and three steals.

For Stony Brook, Lucas Woodhouse had a team-best 23 points and five rebounds.  Roland Nyama added 14 points, two blocks and two steals.

After Campbell buried a three to open the game for UAlbany, Stony Brook went on a 9-0 run, capped by steal and fast break scores by Nyama and Kameron Mitchell, to lead 9-3 in the opening 3:35.

Campbell hit a layup to end the Stony Brook run.  Stire hit a pair of free throws to follow to get UAlbany back within two.  After a couple of exchanges, a layup by David Nichols sparked a 6-0 run, continued by a Stire putback and two Cremo free throws, to push UAlbany ahead 15-14 with 10 minutes left in the 1st.

The two started to exchange with field goals sending the lead back and forth in front of the over fotry-five hundred fans in the arena.  UAlbany got a bit of breathing room with a turnaround jumper by Travis Charles to make it 23-20 Great Danes with 5:20 left in the 1st.

With a pair of Akwasi Yeboah free throws, Stony Brook tied it back up at 26. Ennema hit a jumper with a hand in his face, then after an SBU free throw, Nichols drew a double team to free up Stire for the thunderous dunk.  UAlbany led 30-29 at the break.

Following another exchange, Nyama netted a pair of baskets in a row, followed by three Seawolf free throws, for a 7-0 run to send Stony Brook ahead 38-32 in the first 3:02 of the second half.

The UAlbany defense started to hold on possessions, allowing just one Stony Brook basket in a span of four minutes.  UAlbany chipped away at the deficit, with a layup off the glass from Nichols pulling the Great Danes within three at 43-40 with 12:24 remaining.

Stony Brook started to fire away from three-point range, leading to the Seawolves going up by double digits.  In a four-minute span, SBU had a 12-3 sprint, capped by threes from UC Iroegbu and Woodhouse, to take a 55-43 advantage with eight minutes to go, later going up 58-45.

UAlbany rallied back, primarily using pressure defense and the free throw line.  The Great Danes put together a 7-0 run, capped by a layup and one by Stire, to get within two possessions at 58-52 with five minutes left.

More free throws for Stony Brook rebuilt the advantage to eight.  UAlbany attacked with the full court press trying to get steals.  Twice UAlbany got to within five, with a couple of Cremo free throws putting the score at 66-61 with one minute left, then Dallas Ennema nailed another three to bring UAlbany within four at 68-64 with 46 seconds left.  But UAlbany could not get closer and fell 72-65 to Stony Brook.

UAlbany has a quick turnaround, heading north to take on New Hampshire on Monday, February 6th at 7 p.m.
