HAMILTON, N.Y. – A 16-2 burst in a six-minute span late in the second half sent the UAlbany men’s basketball team to a 74-66 road victory against Colgate on Saturday afternoon.

Double digit scoring by Joe Cremo and David Nichols sent UAlbany (6-4) to its fourth victory in as many chances against a New York-based opponent.  UAlbany never trailed in the second half and broke away with its late run against Colgate (2-9).

“I was really happy with how we played in the second half; we defended well and shared the ball,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown. “Colgate does a good job being patient on offense and making you guard for long periods of time, and our defensive discipline in the second half was key.”

UAlbany outrebounded Colgate 29-22, leading to 15 second chance points to its opponent’s two.

Cremo earned a career-high 29 points, adding two steals and two assists, shooting 9-for-14 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

“It was a great road win for us, we came off two losses before this week, and it is good for us to get back-to-back victories,” said Cremo.

Nichols notched his ninth double digit scoring game of the year with 17 points and four assists.  Devonte Campbell came off the bench and tallied seven points, five rebounds and two steals.

For Colgate, Francisco Amiel shot 5-for-6 from three, picking up 21 points and two assists off the bench.  Sean O’Brien got 14 points, three assists and three rebounds.

UAlbany’s interior defense protected against the first four Colgate possessions, forcing kickouts and a couple of missed threes.  UAlbany’s guards dribbled and drove, with Cremo, Nichols and Marqueese Grayson scoring in succession.  Cremo added another layup for a game-opening 8-2 UAlbany lead four minutes in.

Colgate continued its firing from three, seeing Francisco Amiel go on a personal 8-0 run, including two made from beyond the arc, to send the Raiders up 10-8.  Cremo and Stire countered Colgate shots, with the latter earning a two-hand slam on a drive down the baseline, as UAlbany tied it up but Colgate went back up 15-13 off a jumper by Sean O’Brien.

After a Cremo jumper, three times in a row Nichols took a defensive rebound from a teammate, drove down the floor and scored inside the arc for a 21-15 UAlbany advantage.

The teams exchanged runs, with Colgate going ahead on an 11-2 run, then UAlbany countering with an 8-0 sprint, capped by six Cremo points including a three-pointer.  The home team pulled to one possession, then a Cremo steal to a Nichols layup made it 35-31 UAlbany advantage at the half.

Colgate got points on its first four possessions of the second half, three of them on free throws.  Layups from Greig Stire and Nichols made it 39-39 at the first media of the second.

Campbell got UAlbany back ahead by ripping the rebound away from Colgate and putting back the layup.  UAlbany held Colgate without points for over four minutes, and without a field goal for over five, as a Nichols jumper made it 43-39 with 14 minutes left in the 2nd.

The teams continued to exchange baskets, with UAlbany responding as Colgate tried to inch closer.  Colgate hit a three on the wing from Jordan Swopshire to pull the home team within three, then Campbell buried a corner three on the next possession to put UAlbany’s advantage back to six at 54-48 with less than seven minutes left in the 2nd.

UAlbany’s defense held Colgate without a field goal for over five minutes and built its lead up, going on an 11-0 run, including seven points from Cremo.  Another a Rayman layup, Nichols hit a free throw, then Cremo added four more to make it 67-50 with 1:14 remaining.

Final minute free throws from Terrel Martin-Garcia and Costa Anderson helped UAlbany seal the game, fending off Colgate three-pointers.  UAlbany took the victory 74-66.

UAlbany stays on the road and heads west, playing Canisius in Buffalo on Monday, December 12th at 7 p.m.
