Seven Great Danes Score Double Figures as UAlbany Menís Basketball Opens at Home with 97-56 Win vs. Oneonta
ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team saw seven players earn double digit points in the season’s home-opening victory over Oneonta 97-56 on Wednesday night.
UAlbany (2-1) dominated Oneonta from start to finish in front of 3,163 in the SEFCU Arena, outrebounding the Red Dragons 69-31 and holding its opponent to 28.2% shooting from the field. 69 rebounds in a game is a new program record for the Great Danes in a single game.
Of the 12 players that saw time on the court for UAlbany, seven scored between 10-16 points.
“We had an opportunity to play a lot of guys, nice in the home opener to have a W,” said UAlbany head coach Will Brown. “We got some guys to play quality minutes today.”
It is the sixth consecutive season that UAlbany has won its home opener. The Great Danes also played their second game in three days after playing at Cincinnati on Monday.
Mike Rowley had a team-high 16 points for UAlbany off 6-9 shooting from the field. Travis Charles had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Jaraan Lands tallied 13 points, five rebounds and two steals.
“It was nice to see a lot of the guys that don’t play much get out there, and they did a good job,” said Rowley. “At the end of the day, it was a team effort.”
For Oneonta, Mikey McElroy finished with 16 points and three assists. Harrsino Deegan concluded with nine points and three boards.
In the beginning, UAlbany attacked the glass on offense with the frontcourt. UAlbany’s forwards combined for the team’s first eight points, including two layups by Stire pushing into the paint, for a 9-4 advantage in the opening 3:36.
As Oneonta drew a couple of layups and one, UAlbany continued to go into the paint. At 13-10, David Nichols and Marqueese Grayson made drives to the basket, the first down the lane and the second along the baseline, to build UAlbany’s lead to 17-10 with 13:42 left in the 1st.
Oneonta started to shoot from three-point, getting to within five on a Lawrence Coleman make from beyond the arc. UAlbany continued the gameplan to hit the paint; at 23-18, the Great Danes, with all layups and free throws, built a 10-3 run, including six points from Rowley, to go up 33-21 with 6:06 remaining in the first.
For over seven-and-a-half minutes, UAlbany held Oneonta without a field goal, keeping its opponent to three free throws in that span. Lands added five points, while Costa Anderson added a layup, a corner kick-out three and a half-court three at the buzzer to send UAlbany up 53-26 at the half.
Oneonta netted a pair of layups in the opening minute of the second half as UAlbany countered with two Charles baskets. Oneonta answered with five points in a row to pull to within 22 at 57-35.
The dominance down low continued with Stire and Rowley, then Nichols had a personal 5-0 run on a long three and a reverse layup to make it 75-41 UAlbany with 12 minutes left.
Terrel Martin-Garcia came in and started to pull down boards and hit shots, including a three up top the arc as part of nine points in just under six minutes. UAlbany kept control the rest of the way, earning a 97-56 victory over Oneonta.
UAlbany will return to playing in the Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, taking on Grand Canyon at the Mohegan Sun on Saturday, November 19th at 8 p.m. on ESPN3.
