Baseball Drops Home Opener to Fordham, 9-3
ALBANY, N.Y.— The University at Albany baseball team (8-13, 1-2) were unable to get the bats going against Fordham (12-13) losing 9-3 in their home opener of the 2016 season.
“Today’s game got away from us in the middle innings, it was one of the first times this has happened to us all year.” said head coach Jon Mueller.
After starter Brian Paulino put the Rams down in order to start the game, Will Miller began the Danes half inning with a single to third base. Miller advanced to third after Kyle Sacks hit into a groundout to third base and Harasta singled to short. Matt Hinchy brought Miller home by hitting a fielder’s choice to the second baseman that got Harasta out but put the Danes up 1-0.
The Rams answered in the top of the second with a double from Joseph DeVito that scored Mark Donardio and Luke Stampfl to give Fordham a 2-1 lead.
Up 3-1, the Rams added five runs over the next two innings. Ian Edmiston began the top of the sixth with a triple down the left field line, which ended Paulino’s day on the mound. Edmiston would score two batters later off a single through the left side by DeVito.
DeVito scored after Runco popped up behind the plate to Harasta, and went home after Pat Gardner was stuck in a run down. Runco added two RBI’s in the top of the seventh with a single through the left side to score Ryan Jennings and DeVito to give Fordham 8-1 lead.
UAlbany made a late push in the bottom of the eighth as Miller hit a double into left field and scored two batters later when Harasta singled through the left side. Hinchy scored that inning from second base when Joey Tracy reached on an error from the shortstop.
Harasta and Miller hit five of the Danes six hits in the game, with Miller scoring two runs and Harasta adding an RBI. The other UAlbany hit came from Garrett Longhurst.
Fordham put together 16 total hits, with DeVito going 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Runco picked up three RBI’s as well going 2-for-5 at the plate.
Paulino (1-1) earned his first loss of the season after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits and struck out three Rams. Sam Decelle, Terry Dugdale and Joe Romero all came in to pitch in relief. Dugdale gave up three earned runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Luke Stampfl (1-0) was awarded the win, going for 3.0 inning and allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out two batters.
The Danes return to the road and America East Conference play as they take on Binghamton for a weekend series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will play a single game on Friday with a doubleheader on Saturday set to begin at noon.
