McLean Leads Baseball in Game Two Win, 7-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— Following a game one 12-2 loss to Western Kentucky University (10-5, 0-0), the University at Albany baseball team (5-8, 0-0) battled back with stellar pitching from freshman Kenny McLean to take game two 7-4 in Saturday's doubleheader.

With the game tied at one in the top of the fourth inning, the UAlbany bats came alive to push across four runs. With Tre Todd and Kevin Donati on second and first with two outs, Will Miller broke the tie with a single through the left side to score Todd and advanced Donati to second base. Kyle Sacks followed with a single to the opposite side of the field to score Donati.

Evan Harasta added a RBI with a single up the middle to bring in Miller from second and Matt Hinchy would finish off the inning with a single to the right side of the field to score Sacks and give UAlbany a 5-1 lead.

UAlbany added two more runs from a sacrifice fly to right field by Donati in the top of the fifth and a Connor Powers double to right field to bring in Hinchy in the top of the eighth inning.

WKU closed the gap in the bottom of the ninth with three runs of their own, but Brendan Ryan was able to get out of the jam getting the Hilltoppers to end the game with a grounder to Donati and give the Danes the 7-4 victory.

Hinchy continued to roll at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Donati and Sacks both hit well picking up three and two hits, respectively, with Sacks adding two RBI’s as well.

McLean (1-0) was awarded with his first ever win at the collegiate level going 6.0 innings and allowing five hits, no earned runs and struck out two Hilltoppers.

Ryan (1) picked up the save for UAlbany, pitching 3.0 innings, with four hits, one earned run and five strikeouts.

Josh Bartley (2-1) lost his first game of the season, pitching 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits, but struck out six Danes in his outing.

Already up 4-1 over UAlbany, WKU opened up game one of Saturday’s doubleheader with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Hilltopper’s Ty Downing hit a single up the middle to score Harrison Scanlon from second base and advanced Paul Murray to third.

Murray would score when the next batter, Steven DiPuglia reached on a bunt and the bases were loaded when Steven Kraft was walked two batters later. Thomas Peter cleared the bases with a double to left field and increased WKU’s lead to 9-1.

Hinchy reached base three times on three singles, while Joey Tracy went 2-for-5 and one run scored. Miller recorded the only two RBI’s of the game for UAlbany on his one hit. Donati also continued to hit well, by batting .500 with one run scored.
